Watch Dogs 2 was revealed just a few days back and presently has gained popularity due to it’s stunning graphics and good gameplay. But the question is can they pitch a good solid story? The first Watch Dogs was a total failure from a story and gameplay perspective but Watch Dogs 2 was looking very sound and I had high expectations from it until reading what Watch Dogs creative director Jonathan Morin has said.
Jonathan Morin said:
“Players start with a few followers in [hacker group] DedSec but pretty soon you realize you’re going to need more if you want to pull off big operations. So you start free-roaming,” Morin continues.
“Every time you get followers, it’s like you’re unlocking the DedSec hivemind. You’re also unlocking new knowledge, new operations, new co-op missions. And then organically you hit those end-game milestones.”
“You can barely touch the story,” Morin added. “You have many different operations which give you followers, which guide your progression.” Within the story there are three “milestones” to hit which finish the game’s narrative, he added, “but mathematically you can unlock everything else through co-op or free-roam”.
“You can play the whole game by yourself, including the co-op content, although I think that’ll be quite difficult,” Morin laughs. “Still, there’s always someone spectacular out there who can so why not let them?
“What we’re pushing for is having a seamless online, and integrating co-op into it. You can play different operations and choose to not even play the story. Activities will scale appropriately. And there is further progression so players stick around after the main story arc if they want.”
According to Jonathan Morin, the game will take off by putting the protagonist in a hacker group known as Dedsec and you will need man power to do bigger operations. Learning these things, it’s clear that you accept to do some repetitive tasks to gain followers and without them there will be missions which you won’t be able to take part in. After reading his statements it is vindicated that the principal objective of the game is to acquire followers.
He also put forward that you can finish the game without even touching the story then this indicates that the story will not be a core element and I feel it’s completely stupid to be able to finish a game without even playing the story and in that case what is the reason to add such a shallow story to a game which is optional? This is just another ridiculous attempt of a game by Ubisoft. The story of a game being optional, can you believe it?
From his statements, it’s clear that Ubisoft is primarily focusing on the free roam and in Co-op. I won’t buy a game solely for free roam. It’s just like buying Just Cause games, but Just Cause games have tons of random adventurous things that you can do which makes you buy them. Watch Dogs 2 will have to prove that they can pull off a really exciting game world which will push us to purchase the game.
Lately, Ubisoft has failed in making the amazing games it was famous for once making, so I have a feeling nothing new may occur with Watch Dogs. We could also probably get ready for major downgrade in graphics.
