Netflix Takes Its First Steps To Disrupt The Indian TV Industry

Ganesh Gaitonde, in association with Netflix, didn’t just rattle Mumbai when he gave the warning that everything will be destroyed, he also gave the current Indian soap industry a lot to think about.

Netflix launched it’s first fully Indian TV series called Sacred Games on 6th July and it has been getting rave reviews from the audience and critics alike. The show feels like a breath of fresh air given till now, that the entire Soap Industry in India produced content to force feed senior citizens who have nothing better to watch in Prime Time Indian Television. But Netflix seems to want to change that.

It’s no secret that Netflix has the highest number of binge-watchers in India, and them taking serious interest in the country only gives more options to the creative people in the industry who have less freedom in Bollywood. And we’ve seen since the early days of Netflix that they aren’t afraid of making unique and/or R rated TV shows or films.

Unlike the usual Hindi Soaps that are present in the current industry, Sacred Games takes a sharp turn, builds a better road, and overtakes all of them in terms of narrative progression, acting, drama, and touching critical issues present in the country. With this show, Netflix sets a bar so high that it makes us wonder how it plans to cross it to begin with. With Netflix trying to build something that is standing on equal terms with some of the greatest international hits like Breaking Bad and Narcos, we can say for sure that they aren’t playing it safe and that makes us even more curious and excited for the future of Indian TV shows.

Of course, Sacred Games wouldn’t be the show it is today without the incredible cast that Netflix seemed to have roped in, including stars like – Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Radhika Apte. They even got the likes of Anurag Kashyap on the directing seat, better known for his film that has garnered a cult following over the years – Gangs of Wasseypur. Their phenomenal acting and the unexpected progression of the story + the fact that we get to see some big Bollywood names in a TV show environment, gives the show so much more life than we expected.

With upcoming shows like Ghoul featuring Radhika also on the way from Netflix, we can’t wait to see what they do next, but one thing we can say for sure is that the Indian soap industry won’t remain the same for long with the advent of shows like the ones that Netflix is bringing on the table.
